Minnesota (AP) - In a tight Sunday evening game, the Minnesota NorthStars won a back and forth game against Detroit by a score of 4-2. It was an exciting battle that saw numerous lead changes. 5 minutes in, Adam Oates opened the scoring with a nice one-timer. Then Minnesota tied it up on Hawerchuk's 5th goal of the season with under a minute left in the first period. Minnesota would get a late 2nd period goal by Kevin Lowe (his 3rd of the year) to take the lead. Then with 90 seconds remaining in the 2nd period, Ladouceur tied up the game to bring the two teams to the 3rd period all tied up.
5 minutes into the 3rd period, Detroit's Zombo would take a double minor penalty and just 20 seconds into that PP opportunity, the NorthStars took the lead on Vaive's 5th goal of the season. The back and forth affair would continue when Detroit would tie it up yet again half way through the 3rd. Luckily, for Minnesota fans, just a minute later, the always reliable Dino Ciccarelli would become Minnesota's saviour as he has done all season - this time scoring his 13th goal on the season and it would be a game winner. Goaltender Don Beaupre made 21 saves for the win, his 6th on the year and moves up his record to 6-3. Hawerchuk was named the team's first star with a 2 point effort.
With the win, Minnesota moves up to 4th in the league with a 9-5 record. Their 56:40 goal differential is now 3rd best in the entire league and 2nd best (to the Canucks) in their Conference. Minny's farm team (Springfield) also picked up a win on the night over Detroit's farm club (Adjrondack) by a 6-3 score. Scott Bjugstad scored twice in the game while G Kari Takko allowed 3 goals. The NorthStars will travel back home after tonight's game and will host the Toronto Maple Leafs on Monday night.
